The City of Newark is located in the southeastern end of the San Francisco Bay and is bordered by the City of Fremont and the bay. The Newark Police Department serves 44,204 residents and a land area of approximately 13 square miles. The police department’s budget for Fiscal Year 2017/2018 is $19,523,700 and includes a staff of one Chief, two Captains, two Lieutenants, nine Sergeants, 45 Police Officers, and 22 non-sworn (civilian) full-time positions.

There are two divisions within the police department: Field Operations and Support Services. Overall supervision of each division is the responsibility of a Commander. The Support Services Division is responsible for areas such as Records, Communications, Detectives, Property and Evidence, Internal Affairs, Personnel and Training, Community Engagement, the Volunteer Program, and The Red Light Photo Enforcement Program. Field Operations includes Patrol, K9, Traffic, Animal Control, Vehicle Abatement, the Special Enforcement Team, School Resource Officers, Southern Alameda County Major Crimes Task Force Detectives, Honor Guard, SWAT, and Hostage Negotiation.

Volunteer groups include our RAVEN (Ready & Active Volunteers Engaged in Newark) staff who assist in the Traffic, Patrol, and Records Divisions; Explorers/Cadets who are young people aged 14-24 interested in law enforcement; Graffiti Abatement volunteers who dedicate their time to keep Newark graffiti-free; and Reserve Police Officers who supplement our sworn staffing levels.

The men and women of the Newark Police Department are committed to providing the highest quality police services to our citizens, business owners, and visitors alike. Working in partnership with our community, we strive to protect the life, property, and liberties of all individuals, be proactive in the deterrence of criminal activity, and enhance the quality of life for our citizens.

The Newark Police Department is a special place to work because of its “small city” atmosphere and the tremendous support we receive from the community, City Council, City Manager, and other city staff. The cohesiveness of our officers, command staff, and line personnel also creates a positive and rewarding working environment.
