East Bay Overview
"The strength and beauty of the San Francisco East Bay is found in its diversity of life styles, communities and downtowns, businesses, industries and workforce. From an eclectic collection of shops, restaurants and museums to hiking trails, vistas and award-winning wineries, the diverse communities of the East Bay offer a wide range of tastes and interests, nationalities and businesses.

The East Bay has become one of the nation's most popular regions to live and work because of its mild climate, scenic vistas and extraordinary quality of life that is unsurpassed by any other metropolitan area. Residents enjoy beautiful weather year-round, a clean environment and safe communities.

Diversity is also the strength of the East Bay's economic base as it continues to provide well paying jobs to its residents and offers an economic stability that is much less volatile than the specialized economies of San Jose (electronics) and San Francisco (tourism).

The East Bay has a very strong-high tech industrial base. Drug development, medical devices, software, telecommunications, information technology and other knowledge-based companies can be found throughout the East Bay taking advantage of the excellent access to housing and workers. The East Bay also offers a variety of office, retail, industrial, light industrial, warehouse and R&D space that is more affordable than San Francisco and closer to a much larger portion of the Bay Area's workforce. For this reason, many large software multimedia and telecommunication companies have established large campuses in the East Bay." (Source: East Bay EDA Business Resource Guide)

Public Transportation for Employees
Newark is served by the Alameda County Transit (AC Transit) bus line that can take employees from Newark to either Fremont or Union City Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) stations. The 29 Line leaves Union City BART every half hour and travels to the Four Corners shopping area in Newark. For employees who wish to reach the Fremont BART station, there are bus lines in place. Most lines run from 6:00 a.m until 7:30 p.m. to accommodate the flexible hours of businesses.

BART serves Alameda, Contra Costa, and San Francisco Counties. All 35 stations are served by connecting buses, express buses, or shuttles. Nineteen stations have reserved parking for commuters who carpool to BART.

In addition to AC Transit, the Dumbarton Express will take employees from the Palo Alto Caltrain Station to a Park-and-Ride lot at the intersection of Highway 84 and Newark Boulevard to the Union City BART station. This service currently charges just $1.75 and arrives in Newark as early as 7:07 a.m. and leaves as late as 6:55 p.m.

RideMatch, a service offered by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission and Bay Area Transportation Partners, will assist in matching Bay Area employees to people with a similar commute in order to establish a carpool. If there is a large enough pool of riders, often a van pool can be established.
