Newark maintains 10 parks throughout its community. In addition, Newark is adjacent to the 21,000 acre San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge. Visitors can also explore East Bay Regional Park District's Mission Peak Regional Preserve rising 1,500 feet out of the Bay plain, the 900-acre Coyote Hills Regional Park, and the 200-acre Ardenwood Historic Farm - - all just minutes from the City. There is also a 12 mile Alameda Creek Regional Trail connecting the Bay shoreline with Niles Canyon.

Newark is also home to the 30-acre George M. Silliman Recreation Complex. This complex contains soccer and softball/baseball fields. The Community Activity Center provides a large range of recreational activities for our community. The George M. Silliman Recreation Complex on Mowry Avenue at Cherry Street, encompasses approximately 37,500 square feet and includes the following features and activities:

  • A gymnasium featuring a regulation high-school length basketball feature court, two regulation high-school length cross-courts, or three volleyball or badminton courts. Spectator seating for up to 250 visitors is included for the feature court.
  • An aerobic/dance studio with a floating maple sports floor and high-quality stereo sound system.
  • A fitness center with free weights and dedicated fitness, cardiovascular, and weight-training machines.
  • A teen activity area, complete with a games room which includes billiards, foosball, table tennis, and video games, and a lounge and study area with a large-screen television, stereo sound system, conversation area, and study area with Internet access.
  • A community meeting room, with a capacity of 75 - 100 people, which is available for meetings, social gatherings, and other rental uses.
  • A licensed child care room for State licensed child care activities.
  • An activity room specially designed for children's activities, which can be used for drop-in child care during scheduled recreational activities.
  • Showers and lockers for men and women.
A whole range of recreational activities are programmed throughout the day and evening for different areas of the building. In addition, drop-in activities, such as pick-up basketball and fitness training, are available at certain times of the day. Use is available on either a membership or per-visit basis.

The George M. Silliman Family Aquatic Center, is a 32,300 square foot indoor swim facility specifically designed for recreation, fitness and instructional programs for the entire family. The 11,350 square foot Natatorium includes four separate pools to provide water activities for all age groups:

  • A 45' x 75' Activity Pool with a "zero depth" entry beach provides easy water elements especially suited for children from toddlers through ages of 10-12. One end of this pool is designed specifically for learn-to-swim lessons.
  • A 245' long Lazy River will provide water activities for teens and preteens and surrounds the Splash-Down Pool for a pair of 20' tall, curving water slides, one a half chute and one a full chute.
  • A 4-foot deep, 4-lane, 25-yard Lap Pool is available for lap swimming, water aerobics and exercise classes.
  • A 12-person warm-water spa.
This facility also includes an additional lobby and reception counter as well as more showers, lockers, and family changing rooms. The lobby is adjacent to a snack bar, which serves sandwiches, drinks, fruit and snacks.
