Your HealthSTEP UP TO HEALTH – IT STARTS IN PARKS! Recently, the Newark Recreation and Community Services Department joined a national movement to address and promote healthy lifestyles and livable communities. As part of the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) and Center for Disease Control (CDC) Step Up to Health initiative, our focus will be on improving the quality of life for all people through lifetime leisure activities that enrich individuals, families and community life. Why Step Up to Health? The UCLA Center for Heath Policy Research recently released information about obesity and inactivity rates among California residents. Some insights included:
According to the President’s Report on Promoting Better Health for Young People through Physical Activity and Sports, it is recommended that children should have 60 minutes of physical activity a day. And adults should exercise a minimum of 4-5 hours per week. Our Role The Newark Recreation and Community Services Department will take a lead role in promoting community health awareness and advocacy. Within our Activities Guide, you will find numerous activities that promote healthy living and active lifestyles. And our Silliman Activity and Aquatic Center is a tremendous resource for all ages. We offer classes in youth martial arts, dance, basketball, soccer and tennis to name a few. For teens, adults and seniors, options include yoga, lap swimming, fitness center, pilates, dance, cardio kickboxing and more. All of our programs are affordable, easily accessed and taught by professionals who care about your health and safety. So please join us as we embrace a newfound awareness of the benefits of a healthy and active lifestyle. Together, we can take great strides as we Step Up to Health in our Parks, Community Centers and neighborhoods!
