Newark, incorporated in 1955, is located 35 miles south of San Francisco, 30 miles south of Oakland, 20 miles north of San Jose, and 395 miles north of Los Angeles, poised on the southeast edge of the San Francisco Bay. The incorporated City of Newark encompasses approximately 13 square miles and boasts a population of 43,693(as of January 2007). The average mean temperature is 57º and experiences an average of 15 inches of rainfall per year.

The City has an urgent care facility for medical needs provided by Washington Hospital, the public hospital district serving Newark, Fremont and Union City. The walk-in clinic is located in the Raley's Shopping Center. There is also a Newark Health Center located across from City Hall that is operated by the County of Alameda.

Newark Unified School District has 8 elementary schools, 1 middle school and 1 high school. There is also an Adult School as well as an Ohlone College campus, which houses the Center for Career Transition whose purpose is to provide the public with full job search and career assistance.

There are 17 houses of worship located in Newark. There is one newspaper, The Argus, published by Media News Group, Inc. that covers the Tri-City area; cable television provided by Comcast, Alameda County Library, and 8 banks. The City's Community Center provides reasonable licensed childcare for 3 - 5 year old children.
