Transportation permits are required in the City of Newark for oversize or overweight loads as defined in Division 15 of the California Vehicle Code. These permits are issued by the Engineering Division. A copy of a valid Transportation Permit must be carried within the vehicle transporting an oversize or overweight load on City streets.
Approved permits can be obtained by mail, by fax (510-578-4243), or in person at the Public Works Department offices in the City Administration Building, 37101 Newark Boulevard, Newark, CA, 94560, during regular business hours.

The permit fee for a single trip is $16 and must begin and end within seven days from the date of issuance as specified on the permit. An annual permit can be obtained for a fee of $90 and is valid for one year from the date of issuance. Annual permits can apply to multiple vehicles, but only one vehicle can be in use within the City's jurisdiction at any given time.
The truck route for the extra legal load must be specified on a single trip permit. Designated truck routes must be used to the extent possible. Review the City's Truck Route Map (PDF).
Proof of Financial Responsibility (Insurance)
All permits require proof of financial responsibility. This is most easily accomplished by providing a copy of a standard Certificate of Insurance of at least $1,000,000 in General Liability. For additional information, read the Transportation Permit Information Summary (PDF).
