Towed Vehicles

You may have noticed the streets of Newark beginning to look less cluttered. Due to the diligence of our Vehicle Abatement Officer, the presence of non-operational, unsafe, and out-of-compliance vehicles is diminishing. The California Vehicle Code, as well as City ordinances, allow for the removal of vehicles from roadways for a variety of reasons, most of which have to do with non-operational, abandoned, or unsafe vehicles. If you find your vehicle missing, contact the Newark Police Department to determine if your vehicle was either towed or stolen. Having your vehicle towed is an extra expense that can be quite costly. We recommend keeping your vehicle registration current, keeping your vehicle in safe working order, and not leaving your vehicle in one location for 72 hours. This will keep our neighborhoods clean and safe.

Vehicle Releases

All towed vehicles require a tow release, which may be obtained 24 hours per day. Most vehicles towed require a $200 administrative tow fee to be paid prior to the vehicle being released. This administrative fee is over and above any fees imposed by the tow company. During the hours of 8:00 am and 5:00 pm, the City accepts cash or ATM cards only – no checks will be accepted. After hours, releases will require an exact cash payment. Below outlines the standard paperwork and information needed for a vehicle release. If you do not have this information, you will need to contact the Records Department during regular business hours (Monday – Friday, 8 am – 5 pm).
