Project Description

Newark’s Citywide Parks Master Plan, adopted on June 22, 2017, identifies the construction of dog parks at Birch Grove Park and Newark Community Park as priority projects. Preliminary designs for both dog parks include separated fence-enclosed areas with double-gated entrances and exits for small and large dogs, shaded seating and water for both canines and owners.

Project Locations

Birch Grove Dog Park

Birch Grove Park is a 15-acre community park located in the eastern portion of Newark at the corner of Birch Street and Robertson Avenue. The schematic design of Birch Grove Park included in the Citywide Parks Master Plan includes a 1.3 acre dog park located near the intersection of Birch Street and Robertson Avenue.

Newark Community Dog Park

Newark Community Park is located within the northern portion of Newark along Cedar Boulevard between Newark Boulevard and McDonald Avenue.  The schematic design of Newark Community Park included in the Citywide Parks Master Plan identifies a nearly one acre dog park along the park’s northern edge near the intersection of Cedar Boulevard and Chapman Drive.

Schedule & Updates

Design efforts are currently underway. A Request for Proposals for Design Services was released on August 7, 2017. On October 26, 2017 City Council awarded a Contractual Services Agreement to Robert Mowat Associates for the design of the Birch Grove and Newark Community Dog Parks. Design alternatives will be presented to the community for review and input through public workshops.

Construction of the dog parks is anticipated to begin in Summer 2018.
