Fire Prevention

The Fire, Life, and Environmental Protection Division (FLEP) is typically the code compliance and public education component of the department. They work to make Newark a safer place by educating the public, enforcing the Newark Municipal, Fire, and Building Codes (where applicable), and coordinating with the Operations Division.

The FLEP Division is comprised of personnel from the Fire Prevention Bureau and Hazardous Materials Bureau.

FLEP's main functions are:

  • conducts fire code compliance inspections
  • performs plan checks and review of new construction
  • investigates fires and arson
  • provides prevention education and public information
  • regulates hazardous materials
  • administers the City's storm water program

PERMITS: To obtain a fire permit, fill out a Fire Permit Application form at the Fire Administration Office, be prepared to pay the permit fee.
